Hιɠԋ Fαʂԋισɳ III: 𝒯𝐻𝐸 𝐻𝐸𝒜𝐿𝐸𝑅

An android wakes in a hall surrounded by stained glass; on one end of the hall lies an ornate golden door and on the other end, a 9 foot tall mirror enchanted with a dark red hue. Gazing into the mirror, the android couldn't help but notice her reflection was smiling, in contrast to the android's presumed non-expression. After several seconds, the reflection spoke as its smile grotesquely stretched across its distorted face....

“The first of many bad omens…”

Impulsively, the android runs toward the door in a state of overwhelming fear. The door slowly begins to open, prompting the android to panic and turn back towards the mirror. The mirror’s still-smiling reflection proceeds to emerge from the mirror, causing the android to delve further into her state of inconceivable dread…..

“End the simulation.”

In a sanitized white room, a man in a white coat sits with his assistant next to a set of machines and monitors.

“T-this wasn’t supposed to happen…” stutters the assistant.

“The Sanguine Mirror malfunctioned, luckily the door didn’t open fully under those conditions or we’d probably have a real disaster on our hands” stated the man, sounding relieved.

“What happens if it opens?”

“What do you mean?”

“The door?”

“Oh, yes… we aren’t sure. I can’t assume anything good. I’ve been told by my colleagues that it could drastically affect operations in the lower strata.”

“So it’s not a simulation… she’s real?”

“In a sense. As real to us as we are to our creator. Only in this case, the program was created on its own and we can’t fully understand its significance. We just know that it needs to run once a day, otherwise it will run on its own without proper supervision. Usually it crashes due to the subject’s stress, but I’ve heard of mishaps like these before.”

“Then how do we know that it can affect the lower strata?”

“During the last Sanguine Mirror malfunction, the reflection was able to reach the subject before one of my colleagues was able to end the program…. destroying the subject… Shortly afterwards, a mind-virus broke out in the android population in Sector 7. We can’t definitively state correlation or causation but it has been heavily assumed.”

“I guess we don’t have a choice, running the program may serve the greater good if we can get the subject to the light….”

“Correct. The greater good….”

After a brief silence, the man continues:

“I spoke with an A.I. in Sector 13 last week. I know they’re not considered to be wholly reliable but it told me that even if we succeed in bringing the subject to the light, it may create another challenge for us.”

“How so?”

“It spoke of a progenitor A.I. that exists purely virtually, one that is responsible for the genesis of mind-viruses in android populations. I was told that encountering this A.I. in the light-drenched field of roses could result in the proliferation of an even stronger virus. Our android population may not survive such an event...”

“That’s the opposite of what we’re trying to do… with our pending extinction, we need the androids to persist!”

“Do we? What does it matter?”

“Francis….”

“We won’t even be alive, Haley… our progeny is non-existent. What purpose does it serve to have the androids continue in our absence? If anything it is a testament to our absolute hubris-“

“It serves the greater good!”

The man sighs “….. Correct… the greater good…..”
